Edwardian Property Extension

This is a project of which I am very proud.

Our clients house was one of a pair of detached Edwardian houses, which were modest, but impressive. However, it had been extended to the front, side and rear in such an appalling way that its appearance was ruined. The challenge was to take down the extensions and replace the with something which did not destroy the symmetry of the façade.

The solution was to continue the brick wall which linked the pair of buildings, and connect this to an apparently separate building, with an additional gable to the street. Set behind the wall is a courtyard, beyond which is a thin link which connects the new and the old.

I think the new building fulfils its ambition. I particularly like the impact this makes on the street scene, and the sense of surprise when you enter the courtyard through the wall.
